Here are my thoughts for the moment on elections. Unfortunately, I find myself looking at the negatives in hopes of waking some up that there are so many negatives happening regarding the elections. Wisdom is to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. One way to achieve that is to know the tactics of the serpents. Then we can be harmless by avoiding being caught up in them.
I am saddened by the venomous words that many Americans (including Christian Americans) throw about during election years. I see websites that anonymously claim to know despicable things that no one can verify. And those unverified statements are spread over the internet as if they were truth. Another word is slander. Most of the things thrown about are aimed at character assassination instead of forming opinions about actual events. Critiquing an actual event would require knowing some facts. The majority of citizens barely know any facts about government and politicians. That is a problem.
We know what we know from the media. And the media more often than not lies. This is a terrible situation, People in the communication industries are willing to obfuscate the facts to fit their agenda. A snip here and a snip there of words or a video and it works. They are good at it. Most people will not be able or willing to notice or to look for the whole article or the entire speech or video. So it is no wonder we don’t really know many accurate facts.
We don't notice because of our own agendas. Some will choose one or the other politician because their friend was offended by the government in some manner and they are going to protect their friend by lashing out at whoever they feel is at fault. It is a reasonable response. Some Christians choose from a misguided idea that one party is evil as portrayed by other clever vocal people. Another will choose because someone put forth the nice safe idea that only one party has Christian values embedded in it, and so forth. Truth is there is no Christian party, there are Christians in all of them as well as Christian values dispersed throughout them. There is no evil party, there is evil throughout all our government somewhere. There is no perfect candidate. Every one of them is flawed, has made bad horrible choices (some we can see, some won't be revealed until it doesn't matter), and has shown some level of incompetency. Not a one of them deserve to be elected to the presidency. And there are lies being thrown about as truth regarding all of them. It is confusing to anyone.
It is possible to debate for or against any one of them ad infinitum. We do the same with the Bible unfortunately. There are few, yes few, with the temperament to be able to step back and look for the truths in the Bible and accept whatever it is, and adjust whatever they have to in order to draw closer to God. And it appears that today in 2016 there are few with the temperament to step back and look for the best candidate amongst these imperfect choices that will be best for the nation's needs as a whole.
It is never one, two or three things or points, such as abortion, gay rights, religious freedom, ISIS, immigration, guns, and education. The needs of the nation are many and complicated. There are so many important needs that it would take many more than these words to just make an impartial partial list. Even though there are only two major choices for president, it looks like a real crazy throw of the dice IMO as to how this may come out. I hear we have more than two party choices on the ballot this year. And I am capable of stepping back and sifting. And I say this is a very difficult election, the worst so far IMO. So, I will read and listen and pray strong and hard that God is somehow able to make this work. And I will vote, when it is time to vote, not before.
In the meantime, it pains me to read words of character assassination, faulty generalizations, dark assumptions, equivocations, clamorous insistence on irrelevancies, outright lies (plenty of that going around), just plain bad reasoning, calls to murder (I find that shocking), calls to take someone to court, really bad logic, and so much hate filled foul words. And whether we say them or we repost or repost someone else who says them, it is all the same. We spread the filth and the hateful attitudes. No one is immune to this atmosphere. I have had to back up and reconsider thinking too rashly and harshly. I am working on it.
Please consider my imperfect words. Please consider stepping back and looking at the real issues instead of letting ourselves be swept up with mob thinking, slogans instead of issues, slander, and all or nothing mentality. There is not a perfect or sinless politician. None of them deserve to lead our nation. But one of them will. Let’s think about this together with our hearts and heads intact.
